Gardening Full Circle

Started to harvest some of my carrots and realized they were infested. Beautiful Anise Swallowtail Caterpillars have taken up residence in the carrot bed. I believe I am going to let them be.

After some research I have learned that they thouroghly enjoy munching carrots on their way to Pupae and Adulthood. Absolutely beautiful creatures.

Best Cheesecake Recipe EVER!

This is the best New York Cheesecake I have ever made in my life!!

I saw this recipe floating on fb. After I made it, I immediately went and bought the book. Awesome Old Timey recipe book, with classic and REAL ingredients. Find it here:¬†Jim Fobel’s Old Fashioned Baking Book!

The Best New York Cheesecake
New York Cheesecake
(Jim Fobel’s Old-Fashioned Baking Book)

5 large eggs, room temperature
2 cups (one pint) sour cream, room temperature
4 8-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature
8 tablespoons (one stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Generously butter the inside of a 10-inch spring form pan. Wrap a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil tightly around the outside bottom and sides, crimping and pleating the foil to make it conform to the pan. This will help to prevent water seeping into the pan when you put it into the bain-marie. Position the baking rack in the center of the oven; preheat the oven to 300* Fahrenheit.

In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the eggs with the sour cream until well blended.(I ALWAYS hand stir instead of beating or electric mixer) Means less air bubbles and less cracks.

In a medium-sized bowl, beat the cream cheese with the butter until smooth and creamy. Add this to the egg-sour cream mixture and beat until smooth.

Add the sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, lemon juice and lemon zest and beat thoroughly, about 2 minutes.

Pour into the prepared springform pan and place in a roasting pan (or other pan) large enough to prevent the sides from touching. Place in the oven and carefully pour in enough very hot tap water to reach halfway up the sides of the springform pan.

Bake for 2 hours, 15 minutes, or until the cake is very lightly colored and a knife inserted in the center emerges clean. Remove from the water bath and carefully peel the aluminum foil from around the pan. Let stand at room temperature until completely cool, about 4 hours. Refrigerate, covered, until well chilled. For best flavor and texture, this cheesecake is best chilled overnight.

Tomato Worms covered in Cocoons! Read why you WANT to keep them…

Just saw this little booger in the garden.

FACT of the day: you WANT to keep these covered worms in your garden.

The white cocoons are the pupae of the Braconid Wasp. These wasps are parasitic insects that prey on hornworms. They will hatch and seek out more tomato worms and eat them!

Ok, so I who doesn’t dream of their own Craft Room!?

With the help of a few things we have had around, we started getting dirty!

First, my husband crafted my yarn storage cabinet organizer by hand, board and nail. Their is no pattern that he went by. Just good ol inginuity. If you have questions I would be happy to answer to the best of my ability on how he made it. The base with cabinets is just a good ol unfinished cabinet we bought from Menards on Clearance. He purchased the 1×12 boards from Menards as well.

Now any craft room with an extra nook and a home of children obviously needs their own “play station”. This table and chairs actually belonged to my husband as a wee lad. They were very plain, and scratched and stained. I just bought some bold color paint and don’t forget the Chalkboard Paint. I painted the table chairs, legs and base under table top. The table top I painted 3 or 4 layers of Chalkboard Paint. It turned out Stunning! I then found my favorite Dr Seuss quote, had it cut in vinyl and applied it to the wall. My husband made the shelf and we adorned it with our favorite Seuss books!

If you have questions please ask! All of my crochet creations can be seen HERE!

1st Birthday!!!

1st Birthday!!!

Ok, my sons first birthday is coming up next month. I did a practice run on making his cake myself. This is how it turned out! Everything but the fishbowl is edible. What!?

Dr Seuss is the theme. I love the quotes and all of the life lessons. What I did was pick my favorite white cake recipe and my favorite marshmallow fondant recipe to make the cake and layers. I bought colored fondant in bricks to make the Cat in the Hat, and the One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

I hand rolled and shaped the cat in the hat with colored fondant and an edible marker pen. I drew the fish and cut them out.

The fishbowl rocks are nerds!
